A study found that people who did not have food within 11-hours during the day had a higher body mass index as well as greater body fat. Eating late at night has become increasingly common these days. Late work hours, going out for dinner post work with friends, late bedtimes, and even favourite TV shows can make you want to eat your dinner late at night. But did you know that late dinners are extremely bad for your health? There’s a reason why some people including some of the fittest Bollywood actors like Alia Bhatt are known to eat their dinner latest by 8 pm, a good two hours before bedtime. Here are some ways late dinner messes with your health.

It makes you fat: Your body needs time to metabolise fats. As the night (starting from sunset) progresses, your body tends to gradually slow down metabolism. You are not as active at night as you are during the day and hence the food you eat late at night gets stored as fat. This leads to weight gain. If you do this frequently it can actually cause obesity.

It could cause acidity: Plus a host of other gastrointestinal problems like gas, bloating and heartburn. Having a late dinner and then sleeping immediately after that makes your stomach acid get refluxed to the oesophagus. This causes problems in your digestion and gives rise to acidity. This is the reason why many people believe in doing shatapavli or walking a hundred steps after dinner. This helps the food to digest and helps your body metabolise. But you are less likely to do any sort of walking after having dinner late at night and will instead prefer going straight to bed.

It could hamper your sleep: The uneasiness you feel as a result of acidity and heartburn is likely to give you sleepless nights. For a sound sleep without any interruptions, make sure to eat at least a couple of hours before bedtime.

It could make you feel tired the next day: A late dinner the previous night will not go unpunished even on the next day. Less sleep and poor digestion will make you feel tired and lethargic the next day. If you want to feel fresh and healthy, it is necessary that you have an early dinner the previous day.
