Fashionscape in Paris is currently regaling in the ingenious creations of designers from across the globe. The muses and musings at Paris Haute Couture Week 2025 leaves its audience only with jaws dropped and eyes admiring elegant wardrobe. Our very own fashion diva, Sonam Kapoor, graced the Dior event at the fashion week. While everyone admired the drama that unfolded with oversize faux-fur coat, what really caught the eye was a black gajra! Yes, you read that right, a black gajra sat with perfect finesse on Kapoor’s hair.
Sonam Kapoor is the first South Asian global ambassador for French luxury house Christian Dior. Like every year, she attended the fashion house’s ongoing Paris Haute Couture Week and made heads turn with her sophisticated fashion game.
This year she donned a black mesh ensemble, from their Spring/ Summer 2025 collection. She paired it with a magnificent faux fur coat from the Resort 2025 collection.
Raising the glam quotient, she opted for a sculpted makeup look with pink cheeks, brown-pink palette eye shadow and sharp contour. Accentuating the ensemble, her choice of accessories was chain pearl earrings, earcuffs. Well, this was not it, dramatic English leather gloves ran upto her elbows as she walked in long boots. A neatly drawn hair updo became the highlight of her attire as it was adorned with a unique ornament – gajra.
This is not your ordinary gajra that sits with a blissful aura and enhances the beauty of the one who wears it. This is a black gajra curated by Harshita Gautam, founder of Diaries of Nomad.
First, lets understand the essence of agajra in Indian scape. Gajras are one of the first floral jewellery that was regarded as a significant piece of hair ornament for brides. It was the part of “solah sringar” concept for Indian women. As the time evolved, so did the meaning in usage in different traditions. However, black gajra is not known to have traditional roots, as yet.
Just like us, the designer was also amused when Sonam Kapoor’s stylist, Rhea Kapoor reached out to her with this amusing request. Speaking with The Indian Express, she shared the process of making this iconic black gajra, “We took shankis, or shells, and covered it with handwoven chanderi. We made about 350 of those and tucked them on a silk rope, dhuri, and used motis to connect them.” It was made by a group of 10 women in over four days.

After her fashion feast in black, the ‘Aisha’ actress headed for the second part of the monochrome palette. A breathtaking vision in white, Kapoor got eyes fixated in the regal and luxury aura.
This time, it was an overcoat with huge floral applique work in one shoulder. She wore two-knitted skirt and sweater and paired it with statement rings and Piaget jewelled watch.
