A study published in the journal Cell Reports suggested that a ‘dose of the TRIM9 gene could reduce brain swelling after stroke, prevent damage following a blow to the head (concussion) or encephalitis, which is the inflammation of the brain.’ Some amount of brain inflammation has an important role in fighting infection and clearing away dead tissue. However, inflammation for a long duration could lead to the death of neurons. The researchers also found that older brains contain a low or negligible amount of TRIM9 levels which make it prone to extensive swelling following a stroke. TRIM9 grows scarce with age.
The researchers, however, agree that the best shot at treating stroke is within the first 30 minutes to one hour. This is called the Golden Hour. Here are some very important things you need to know about the golden hour of stroke, warning signs of stroke and what you must do about it:
During a stroke, the blood supply to a part of the brain is cut off which naturally affects the nerves and other parts of the brain. This can either lead to death or paralysis and disability of varying severity depending on where the stroke has happened and how quickly the action was taken.
Some of the common symptoms of stroke include slurred speech, drooping of one side of the face, headache and dizziness, blurred vision and muscle weakness. As soon as you notice these stroke symptoms, it is important for you to immediately take medical help preferably within the first 30 minutes or one hour. This is called the golden hour. Some believe that medical help received within 4 hours after the stroke is also helpful. The important point to note is that medical help ASAP will make a difference in recovery and treatment. Stroke patients are administered medication that treating the blood clot. The later the treatment a patient receives, the more number of nerve cells die in the brain.
