What if this is a nightmare and it would end when I wake up from sleep? How many times this thought had crossed our minds when reality reflected so much pain that we prayed it to be just a horrible dream nearing its end soon. But as it’s seen on countless occasions reality can be far more tormenting than the fiction. Having Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States and his gloating reminded us of a living nightmare. Seeing Hillary Clinton supporter bawling and later hearing the Democratic nominee during her concession speech was another heart-breaking moment. It has been days since the results showed America chose a leader in Trump but the feeling is yet to sink in. Clutching the rope of hope a little longer, we want to believe the hoax, rumours or conspiracy theories that would rule out the present results in favour of Hillary Clinton. This is not the first event which felt like the stuff of nightmares as we have shed tears on other incidents in the past.
1. Team India’s 2003 World Cup defeat
The wound of Dada’s Men in Blue losing the 2003 final to Australia is fresh in our memories. Sourav Ganguly led Indian cricket team riding on good performance throughout the tournament reached the finals where they faced two-time defending champs Australia. India who was featuring in finals 20 years after their historic win in 1983 was touted to be the new champions. But right from the first ball nothing went India’s way leaving the players hapless on field and fans crying hard back home. Not ready to accept the painful reality, fans continued to read and believe in possibilities of getting the World Cup to India. Remember the news article carrying a report saying the Aussie players had failed the drug test and now India would be made the world champions only to realise later it was cruel April Fool joke!
2. Killing of Harambe
On May 28 this year, a 17-year-old gorilla named Harambe was shot dead in the Cincinnati Zoo. Reason? To save a 4-year-old toddler who fell into the 400 pounds gorilla’s exhibit moat. The incident which took place a day after the 17th birthday of Harambe divided the world into two groups of people questioning the killing of endangered Silverback and blaming the boy’s parents for negligence. Described as the ‘gentle giant’ by its caretaker the animal was said to be highly intelligent. Definitely, one of the most difficult decisions was taken by the zoo officials when they decided to save the boy after Harambe was seen dragging him.
3. The Great Barrier Reef on the brink of death
The obituary published in the Outside Magazine titled “Great Barrier Reef (25 Million BC-2016),” by the writer Rowan Jacobsen caused an uproar around the world. After all the death of 25 million old world’s largest coral reef supporting a vast diversity of life is no joke. The researchers and conservationists claimed the coral reefs to be not dead as of now but they are drastically approaching their end could not be ruled out. With 2300 single reefs and 900 islands, Australia’s greatest natural wonder was bleaching caused by the climate change and is said to be counting its last days of existence.
4. Paul Walker’s death in tragic car crash at 40
Deaths can rattle you. And untimely ones leave a scar on your mind and heart. Even three years down the line Hollywood heartthrob Paul Walker’s death still seems surreal. On November 30, 2013, afternoon, Walker died in a single-vehicle collision alongside friend Roger Rodas. The news of Fast & Furious star’s death sent entertainment world into a tizzy. One just refused to believe that Walker has passed away in a freak accident at the age of 40. With tears rolling down the eyes for days and still it’s hard to come to terms that he is no more. And the heartache only worsens when you see him smiling in one of his old movies while surfing the channel.
