As per a recent study, eating high fiber foods after the diagnosis of colorectal cancer is tied to a lower mortality risk from colorectal cancer. A change in the diet with more fiber intake was associated with improved survival. The data about diet and intake of fibers of 1,575 patients with colon cancer was analyzed by the senior study author Dr. Andrew Chan, Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. It was found that  intake of each extra five grams was linked to 22 percent lower death risk from colorectal cancer as compared to lowest intake of fiber. However, the type of fiber is also important. It appeared that the mortality risk from colorectal cancer was lowest with whole grains and cereal fiber. The study found that intake of every extra 5 grams of cereal fiber was associated with 22 percent decreased risk of death from all causes and 33 percent decreased risk of mortality from colorectal cancer.
