Gingivitis refers to a gum inflammation which occurs when plaque on your teeth spreads till the gum line and below it and causes inflammation around the gingiva near the base of the teeth. This is due to a bacterial infection. Some symptoms of gingivitis include bleeding, swollen red gums and bad breath. Many of us have a tendency to take our dental problems lightly. When it comes to gingivitis, however, you need to ensure that you get help as soon as possible because it can cause serious dental health complications like tooth decay, tooth falling and periodontitis. The best way to prevent gingivitis is to take good care of your teeth and gums by brushing regularly (twice a day), flossing, cleaning your tongue and using a mouthwash. A new study found that a plant-based diet could be effective in treating gingivitis. Here are some other simple home remedies for gingivitis that you can try:

Oil pulling: This is a popular Ayurvedic remedy that’s known to be effective for the treatment of gingivitis. It is also called Kavala Graha or Kavala Gandusha. All you need to do is fill your mouth with oil, close the mouth and retain the oil for 15 to 20 minutes while swishing the oil in your mouth. Make sure that the oil coats all the parts of your mouth, teeth and gums. Resist the urge to spit out before 15 minutes. If you feel like doing so, spit it out and take a fresh batch of oil in your mouth. When this oil turns milky white, spit it out.

Neem: According to a research in the Journal of Indian Society of Periodontology, rinsing the mouth with neem water is good for the treatment for bacterial infections of the gum. Just boil clean water with a few neem leaves. Keep this solution in a bottle. Rise your mouth with this neem water solution several times in a day.

Saltwater: Just mix salt in warm water and rinse and gargle your mouth with this water. This is an age-old solution for alleviating gingivitis. Salt has the ability to kill germs and bacteria in the mouth. It is best to do this in the morning and at night before bedtime.

Clove oil: Applying clove oil on painful gums can help reduce pain and kill the bacteria. Clove has powerful properties to treat a variety of dental problems including bad breath and prevent cavities.

Make sure that you consult with your dentist for gingivitis and other dental problems. These home remedies can help alleviate the symptoms.
