Hartalika Teej is one of the four main teej festivals in India and is a prominent festive occasion in north India. This year, it falls on August 24 and women both married and unmarried celebrate this day by observing a fast. Prayers are offered to deities Shiva and Parvati as it is believed that Hartalika Teej is an occasion of the union of these two gods. The festival falls in the Hindu calendar month of Bhadrapada. Women wake up early and after taking a bath perform prayer rituals. They also observe a fast on this day and refrain from drinking water as well. The idea behind the fast is to please the gods to gain good health, prosperity and marital bliss in one’s life. While married women observe a fast for their husbands, unmarried girls do it to get an ideal husband. The fast lasts for a day and women also get ready in traditional attire to celebrate the day. Green is a popular color that is worn on this day. Apart from clothes, women also accessorize on Hartalika Teej. If you too are observing a fast, here are some tips to get the right look for this festival.

Wear a bindi

Bindi is one of the symbols of a married woman and looks extremely good with traditional wear. To look your best, wear a bindi of a matching color of your dress or simply a red one to draw attention to it. Round is the preferred shape for this occasion.

Maang teeka

If you are an unmarried girl, you can choose to wear a maang teeka instead of a bindi as it looks pretty as well. From delicate to elaborate ones, you can choose one according to your face type and also based on how much you want to dress up. It should be right in the centre of your forehead. Don’t forget bangles

Bangles are one of the main accessories to wear on Hartalika Teej. Women wear a chunk of bangles on both hands to celebrate this day. Wear at least six on each hand so that your wrists look full. You can choose green or red colored bangles or even opt for metallic gold and silver ones.

Apply mehendi

Mehendi or henna is usually applied by women on festive occasions and so Hartalika Teej should also be the same. Apply mehendi that dries quickly and can be washed away soon so that you are ready for the occasion quickly.

Like any other festival, doing a bit of makeup to look your best is a norm. Do apply lots of kohl in your eyes and opt for red lipstick for this festival. You can also go a bit bold with makeup by using blush and mascara and eyeshadow.

These tips will help you look your best on the occasion of Hartalika Teej.
