Bored of going to your gym? Can’t get yourself pumped up to attend your neighbourhood yoga class? If you have tried everything to remain fit but haven’t succeeded so far, you have got to try dancing! Dance is a medium of physical activity and a creative outlet that helps channelize energy in a resourceful manner. What’s best is that dancing is for everyone. “With a dance class, people find something to look forward to and they get to participate in an activity that they like. People who may be perceived as introverts get a platform to express themselves and their personality starts reflecting positively,” says Shiamak Davar.

Health benefits of dancing
Dance is a great hobby where one can learn, enjoy and work out at the same time. No matter what form of dance you choose, each class targets towards skilful progression to improve fitness levels, confidence, focus, concentration, team spirit, positive thinking, and discipline, all-round development, posture and body language.

Learning dance is not just about the art form or about engaging in physical activity, but it is also an experience that can give you confidence, improved blood circulation flow, strengthened muscles, weight loss and better coordination and balance. “Dance is a great way to release energy, shed inhibitions and let out emotions. It helps one grown mentally and those who practice dance as an activity helps developing the brain in its own creative unique way,” Shiamak says.

Dance involves cardiovascular/ aerobic fitness, core strengthening and stretching for flexibility in one’s body. Unlike a lot of other physical activities where you are on your own, when you join a dance class, you work together in a group and this sense of team spirit encourages you to learn as a team. Dance requires a lot of stamina which ensures the body is agile and light.

Different styles of dance are also different forms of work out. While ballet works completely on inner strength, balance and posture, Hip Hop/Bboying have exercises that require stronger arms and legs. Indian Classical dance forms are strenuous workouts for the quadriceps with all the squats.
If you are working professional, there’s every reason for you to try out dancing.  Dancing is a stress buster where you can disconnect your worries and refresh your mind. Dancing can channel your mind into a positive space. For many, it helps to connect with like-minded people, find friends and even network with a different circle.
