Using a lip liner before applying lipstick can help you define your lips and also make the lipstick last longer. But applying lip liner can be a challenging task for most people. So if you find applying lip liner correctly a bit difficult, we will show you how to do it correctly. If done right, you can prevent lipstick bleeding and add more definition to your lips. Here’s how you need to start applying lip liner to get the perfect pout. (ALSO READ 15 life-changing lipstick hacks every woman needs to know).
STEP 1: Before you begin, exfoliate your lips to get rid of the dead skin buildup. Use an exfoliating balm or a scrub. If you don’t have one, you can apply some lip balm on your lips and scrub them gently using a clean toothbrush. Then apply a light moisturizing balm and wait for it to dry or simply dab your lips with a tissue paper to remove the excess balm.

STEP 2: If you want your lipstick to stay longer, it is recommended that you apply a lip primer. It will make your lips even toned and also hold the lip liner and lipstick longer. You can also use a concealer or foundation in place of primer to get even toned lips.

STEP 3: Choose your lip liner first as per the color of the lipstick you intend to apply. Sharpen your lip liner to get a good and precise line as you define your lips. Sharpen the liner before each use. If you want the liner to glide easily on your lips, warm the tip of the liner by drawing on the back of your hand or by rubbing it between your thumb and index finger.

STEP 4: Part your lips slightly and then trace your natural lip line. Start with the center top and center bottom of your lips working your way outwards. Drawing an ‘X’ at your Cupid’s bow then outlining the corner is also an easy way to trace your lips. While tracing the natural lip line, use short strokes to get more precise line.
If you want your lips to appear larger, apply some concealer on the lips and the area surrounding the lips to hide your natural lip line, and slightly exaggerate it using the lip liner. But do not go overboard doing this.
If you want your lips to look smaller, apply concealer on the lips and around it so that you conceal the natural lip line. Then using the liner, draw slightly inside your natural lip line using short and precise strokes.

STEP 5: To fill in your lips, one option is to blend the liner into your lips and then use a coat of clear lip gloss over it to get a natural look. But if you want to wear a lipstick instead of filling in your lips with the lip liner, grab a lipstick of the same shade. Before applying the lipstick you can coat your lips with the lip liner so that you lipstick stay put longer. Or directly use the lipstick and starting at the center of your lips, apply the lipstick working outwards. If you want it to be more precise, use a brush to apply the lipstick. STEP 6: Now that your lips are filled, you can clean the area around your lips if you have smudged it a little bit outside your natural lip line using some makeup remover. Use a cotton swab dipped in makeup remover to get rid of the smudges where needed.

STEP 7: You can also apply a little bit of concealer or foundation around your lips (optional). It will not only remove any stains of the lipstick around the edges, but will also prevent your lipstick from bleeding, if you have used a dramatic lip color. Using a small brush apply the foundation or concealer around your lips and then set it with some translucent powder. (ALSO READ How to apply lipstick?
