Wash your face with a gentle cleanser
Before you start applying makeup, start with a clean face. Use a gentle cleanser to wash your face squeaky clean. Cleaning your face before applying makeup will make sure that you do not end up with clogged pores and breakouts. But ensure that you use a gentle cleanser, otherwise a harsh face wash will strip off all the natural oil from your facial skin.
Exfoliate your lips
If you have dead, dry skin buildup on your lips, exfoliate them well. Otherwise the lipstick will appear chapped. Use a homemade exfoliating scrub made with sugar and honey, to exfoliate and hydrate your lips. You can also use a damp toothbrush to slough off the dead skin. Apply chapstick before your put on the lipstick. (ALSO READ Here’s a step-by-step guide to make your own lip scrub at home).
Do not skip the moisturizer
As dry skin produces very little oil, you have to use some moisturizer after you cleanse your face. Use a moisturizer formulated for dry skin that contains hyaluronic acid. This ingredient will help your skin retain moisture. Apply it all over the face, including the neck.
Apply a face primer
Apply primer on your face before you start with the makeup, it will give your skin a smooth base. Applying primer will help your dry skin to be makeup ready without leaving any dry patches on the skin where the makeup can get flaky.
Use liquid or cream foundation
When you know that your skin is prone to flaking always opt for liquid or cream foundations. This will help you to balance the moisture on your skin, so that it does not start flaking. If you do not want a heavy makeup look, you can also use a tinted moisturizer or BB cream instead of foundation. It will hydrate your skin and at the same time it covers all the blemishes. Follow this up with a cream or liquid concealer. (ALSO READ How to apply foundation: 6 simple steps to apply foundation to get flawless-looking skin).
Use cream eyeshadow
Before applying the eyeshadow, first prime the eyelids to get a smooth base. Though powder eyeshadows are easy to blend, it would be better to stick with cream eyeshadow when you have dry skin. Also, instead of the eyepencil, use liquid eyeliner.
Use liquid highlighter
Opt for a liquid highlighter instead of powder. It will give you a fresh, dewy look instantly. Dab the liquid highlighter on the top of each cheekbone and pat it using your finger tips of a beauty blender sponge diagonally along the ridge of your cheekbones.
Choose the right lip formula
Avoid matte lipstick and long-wearing formulas if you have dry lips. Stick to lip gloss or sheer lipstick so that your lips do not become even more dry. If you can, stick to tinted lip balms so that you do not end up with chapped lips. (ALSO READ How to apply lipstick? Tips to apply lip color like a pro and make it long-lasting!).
Do not wear powder
If your skin is prone to flaking, give the powder a miss. You do not need to apply pressed powder all over your face. Instead dust a little bit of loose powder on your T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin), if at all your T-zone becomes oily. Otherwise you can also skip this step.
Use a setting spray
Instead of using setting powder use a setting spray to keep your makeup in place. The setting powder absorbs all the moisture, whereas the setting spray retains the moisture, which will make your makeup last longer. You can also use a few spritzes of a hydrating toner after a couple of hours to help balance the dry skin and to keep your makeup from flaking off.
