The Rise of Fashion Designer Anita Dongre

Anita Dongre was born on October 3, 1963, in Mumbai to a middle-class family. While little is known about her father, several reports suggest that her mother, Pushpa Sawlani, had a talent for stitching, which apparently sparked Anita’s passion for fashion design.

Well, growing up, Anita realised that they are less Indian retail brands that manufacture affordable clothes for working women. Soon, she started her own business with just two sewing machines and took a small loan from her father. In 1995, she and her sister began sewing western outfits and started selling them to major brands. Well, despite facing rejections from several malls and brands, Anita’s confidence remained unshaken.

Undeterred by these setbacks, Anita Dongre went on to launch her own label, which has since become a well known brand in India- AND. After introducing AND designs in 2015, she rebranded the company as House of Anita Dongre. She has risen to become one of India’s most prestigious fashion designers, with multiple successful ventures including AND, Global Desi, Anita Dongre Bridal Couture, Anita Dongre Grassroot, and Anita Dongre Pink City. Moreover, she has turned designer for some of the high prolific celebrities and Bollywood stars including, Nita Ambani, Radhika Merchant, Isha Ambani, Shloka Ambani, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Alia Bhatt, Janhvi Kapoor, Sara Ali Khan, Ananya Panday and many more.

Well, talking about Anita Dongre’s personal life, the 60-year-old fashion expert is happily married to businessman Pravin Dongre. The couple also has a son named Yash Dongre, who is married to Benaisha Kharas. Not much is known about Anita’s family as they prefer to stay away from the limelight.

In an interview, Anita Dongre revealed that her retail turnover reached nearly Rs 800 crore in FY 2019-20 after opening over 270 stores in India. According to DNA, Dongre’s estimated net worth stands at USD 10 million, equivalent to over Rs 83.21 crore.
