Navroz 2017: Step-By-Step Guide to Wear Traditional Gara Saree on Parsi New Year
Jamshedi Navroz or the Parsi New Year, which falls on August 17 this year, is celebrated by Parsis by visiting the fire temple, preparing many delicious dishes and dressing up in traditional attire. Here is a step-by-step guide to wear traditional Gara saree on Parsi New Year.
Navroz is the most vibrant festival of Parsis across the world. Also, known as Pateti, Navroz is the Parsi New Year. According to the Iranian calendar, it is first day of the year and falls on March 21. In India and Pakistan, the Parsis or Zoroastrians follow the Kadmi and Shahenshahi calendar and according to that Navroz or Jamshedi Navroz will be celebrated on August 17 this year. For Parsis, Navroz is the day for renewal of everything. They celebrate the day by decorating their homes, visiting the holy fire temple, buying new cloths and dressing up in traditional Parsi attire. The most distinct outfit in the traditional Parsi wear is the Gara saree, which is known for its exquisite embroidery. A Parsi Gara sari is worn by a girl after the Sari Perawani or the saree wearing ceremony, which is a rite of passage. This beautiful saree is worn during special occasions. Here is a step-by-step guide to wear traditional Gara saree for Navroz. Team it with a sleeveless blouse or a blouse with lace sleeves.
Step 1: Take the inner end of the saree and tuck it in your petticoat on the right side of your waist.
Step 2: Wrap it around your waist anticlockwise. As you take it around your waist, tuck it in.
Step 3: Wrap the saree once around your waist, tuck in a part of saree below your navel temporarily.

Step 4: Now, take the pallu end, pleat it, bring it around your waist and throw it over your right shoulder from back. Make sure the tip of the pallu is just above the hem of your saree. Use a safety pin to secure the pleats on your shoulder.
Step 5: Now, make neat pleats where you tucked in the saree temporarily. While making the pleats, leave some fabric near your left waist and tuck in the pleats below your navel. Use a safety pin to secure the pleats.
Step 6: Take the inner side of the pallu over your chest and under your left armpit. Secure the left tip of your pallu at the back using a safety pin. Pin a brooch on your right shoulder and you are done. Here is a video to guide you.
Do not wear heavy jewelry with this saree, instead opt for a simple pearl necklace to complete the look.
