Onam is a harvest festival of Kerala. This Hindu festival celebrates the arrival of King Mahabali to his beloved Kingdom. According to legends, Mahabali was the ruler of Kerala and people in his kingdom were happy. Gods felt threatened by Mahabali’s growing popularity and asked Vishnu to help them. Vishnu transformed himself as Vamana, a dwarf Brahman, and approached Mahabali on the day he was granting wishes of Brahmans. Vamana asked Mahabali to give him three paces of land. Although he knew Vamana was no ordinary Brahman, Mahabali agreed to grant his wish. Vamana expanded and with two paces he covered the earth and the sky. Vamana asked him where the space for the third pace is. Mahabali bowed before Vamana and asked him to keep his foot on his head. Vamana pushed Mahabali to patal lok but also blessed him and told him that he will be able to visit his kingdom once a year. Onam is the day when Mahabali visits his land Kerala. Onam is a 10-day festival and many events are arranged during the ten days. Pookalam or flower arrangements are made and on the tenth day, a grand feast called onasadya is prepared. This 10-course meal is the highlight of the celebration and you must not miss an opportunity to be a part of this feat.
