Tawang is located in the northwestern part of Arunachal Pradesh and only 30-40 km away from both Bhutan and China. Like all places at a high altitude, Tawang too is cold throughout the year. But the best time to visit is between November and March because though it’s peak season for travelling in the rest of the country, people don’y really travel to this remote destination as much. Avoid travelling here during the monsoon rains; you won’t be able to explore everything the place has to offer. These are the absolute must visit places in Tawang.
Tawang is a haven for monasteries: Tawang Monastery is perhaps the most famous of them all because it is the largest active monastery in the world. The Ugyenling Monastery too is worth a visit because the 6th Dalai Lama was born here.Then there’s the Thegtse Sang-ngag Choekhorling Monastery which is the most colourful of the lot and follows a different sect of Buddhism called Nyingma with a guru Nansid Zilnon where the monks can have long hair and can marry.
If you love learning about the arts and crafts of a place, then visiting the Craft Center and Emporium in Tawang is a must for you. They make different types of hats, bags, paintings, hand-woven fabrics, and woven baskets, as well as knitted products of all kinds.
The Indo-Chinese War Memorial can be visited by all and sundry to pay homage to the 4,220 Indians who died fighting the Chinese in the war of 1962. You could also get a taste of everyday life by spending time at Tawang Town Centre. You’d encounter military men holding guns while walking hand in hand through the town, and women shopping in the vegetable market.
The Sela Pass is a great attraction again, and you’d have to cross it to get to Tawang. Don’t forget to take the camera out to take back some great shots of this place.
