Scientists at the University of Manchester University and Imperial College London have designed a germ-trapping scarf that can protect you from coronavirus. This virustatic shield covers both the nose and mouth and can be worn for hours comfortably. According to the researchers, this snood provides 96 per cent protection against the COVID-19 virus. The best part of this shield is that it is reusable and washable. Also, unlike ordinary masks, this germ-trapping scarf is harmless to touch after being exposed to germs. This is because of the special coating of the scarf which traps the virus and deactivate it. The coating is made of protein compounds similar to those found on the human’s upper respiratory tract. When a virus enters a human body, its spiked structure bonds with this protein layer present in the respiratory tract and that’s where it starts to invade other cells. The newly developed mask has been prepared by keeping this process in mind. So, when a virus comes in contact with this scarf, the same chemical reaction takes place but due to unavailability of any cells to invade, the virus immediately dies. This is why touching it while you are wearing it cannot contaminate your hands and prevent transmission of the virus.

This scientific development took place after 10 years of intense work at the Manchester University and Imperial College London by the researchers. This mask has been tested in the clinical trials and has been proved effective. The snood is in fact now available online for £20.
