Vegan California Sushi Roll Recipe: How to Make Uramaki Style Sushi Roll On World Vegan Day 2017

World Vegan Day is celebrated annually on November 1, to celebrate animal rights. Are you a vegan? If you too are looking forward to celebrating the day, then we have the perfect option for you. You can invite your friends and whip up some incredibly delicious vegan treats for them. Here is a recipe of Vegetarian California Roll, a popular vegetarian ‘uramaki’ style sushi roll. For those who don’t know, Uramaki or inside out roll is a medium-sized cylindrical piece with two or more fillings. The filling is in the center, surrounded by nori seaweed, followed by a layer of rice. The recipe has been shared to us by Sushi And More, Mumbai. Ingredients:

Sushi mat
Nori (Seaweed sheet)
Sticky rice
Sushi vinegar
Avocado
Cucumber
Lettuce
Sesame seeds
Japanese chilli powder
Gari (Pickled ginger)
Wasabi (Japanese horseradish)
Shoyu (Soy sauce)

Pre‐preparation:

Sushi rice: Cook sticky rice (preferably in a rice cooker). Once cooked, remove the rice from the cooker and put in a bowl. Add Sushi vinegar on the rice, spread evenly and mix well (gently).Let the sushi rice cool down to room temperature. Cover the sushi rice with a moist towel to prevent the rice from drying out.

Nori seaweed: Cut the nori seaweed into halves and keep in an air tight box.

Vegetables: Cut the lettuce, cucumber and avocado into thin strips lengthwise.

Sushi mat: Cling wrap the sushi mat to prevent the rice from sticking to the mat while rolling the mat. Roast the sesame seeds and keep them aside.

Method:

To make the Vegetarian California Roll, first place the Sushi mat on a chopping board. Then place the shiny side of the cut nori seaweed on the sushi mat.

Place about 100 grams of sushi rice on the nori seaweed and spread across the seaweed evenly. Sprinkle some sesame seeds and Japanese chlli powder on the rice.

Flip the nori seaweed and sushi rice so that the nori seaweed is facing upward. Place the lettuce, cucumber and avocado in the centre.

Start rolling from the bottom, tucking the edge of the roll to fully enclose the filling. Continue to roll forward until the sushi is formed into a firm cylinder. Slightly wet the blade of a sharp knife and slice the roll into 8 even pieces. Serve with gari, wasabi & shoyu.
