When do you start showing during pregnancy?
Some believe that first-time mothers-to-be show the baby bump later whereas the second-time mums show sooner. Usually, first-time mothers-to-be start showing the baby bump between the 12 and the 16 weeks. The uterus is normally the size of a lemon. Its size increases to the size of a small melon by 14 to 17 weeks of pregnancy. The uterus starts expanding above the pubic bone by around the 12th week and starts showing above your waist. For women who have been pregnant earlier, the baby bump develops sooner and the abdominal and uterine muscles have already been expanded from previous pregnancy.(ALSO READ How accurate is the home pregnancy test: Everything you should know about home pregnancy test kit).
Reasons behind showing early
In case you are showing earlier than expected, here are some of the reasons for it:
Bloating and constipation: Bloating is common during pregnancy and it is caused by the disturbance in digestion. It is also caused due to increased levels of hormones, especially progesterone. The hormone progesterone relaxes the gastrointestinal tract muscle tissues, which slows down the process of digestion. This helps in the baby receiving the nutrients from the food you eat but also causes accumulation of gas.(ALSO READ How to get pregnant: 5 tips for women to conceive faster).
Eating too much: You do not have to eat the amount required for two adults. Remember, your baby is just the size of a peach. Consult your doctor for the right amount of food you should eat during each trimester as over eating could lead to other issues.
Less toned abdominal muscles: If you do not have toned abdominal muscles, chances are that you will show earlier. Usually, women who were pregnant earlier show earlier as their uterine and abdominal muscles have already stretched due to earlier pregnancy.(ALSO READ Why we gain weight in pregnancy: Here’s why there is a weight gain during pregnancy and how much is normal pregnancy weight gain).
Reasons behind showing late
Do not fret, if you are developing baby bump later than expected. This can be due to many reasons. Sometimes the position of the uterus is retroverted, which means tilted towards back, and this can lead to later than expected baby bump. It does not mean that the baby is very small. The size of the baby is measured and assess only when the woman is in her second and the third trimester. Showing late can also be because of your body type.
