New Delhi: Aam Admi Party’s (AAP) East Delhi candidate Atishi on Friday filed a criminal complaint against her opponent, Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) candidate Gautam Gambhir, for holding two voter ID cards. Demanding an immediate disqualification, Atishi has called Gambhir’s candidature ‘criminal’.

“We have filed a criminal complaint in Tis Hazari Court against Gambhir,” she said. The AAP leader alleged that the cricketer-turned-politician has two voter IDs— one from Rajendra Nagar and the other from Karol Bagh. She added that Gambhir will be facing up to one year in prison for this offence.

The Tis Hazari court has said that it’ll hear the matter on May 1.

Soon after Atishi filed a complaint, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal took to Twitter and said, “Voters should not waste their vote on someone who will get disqualified soon (sic).”

However, Gambhir has denied the allegations and accused the AAP of making false claims. “First they make allegations, then go to court and then they apologise,” Gambhir responded. With an annual income of over Rs 12 crore, cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir is among the richest of all the candidates in fray for the Lok Sabha election in Delhi.

The BJP had fielded former cricketer Gautam Gambhir from the East Delhi constituency on April 22. Gambhir replaced Mahesh Giri as the party’s candidate and will take on Arvinder Singh Lovely of the Congress and Atishi of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Gambhir, a resident of Rajinder Nagar in Delhi had expressed gratitude after he had joined the saffron party. He had said, “I am joining this party (BJP) after getting influenced by PM Narendra Modi’s vision. I am honoured to get the opportunity to join this platform.”

Gautam Gambhir was a high-profile campaigner for Union Minister Arun Jaitley’s 2014 contest in Punjab’s Amritsar. He officially announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on December 4, 2018.
