New Delhi: Twitter is abuzz with #MainBhiChowkidar trend that started on Saturday morning after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Twitter handle posted a video and a message along with, declaring that every person who stands against injustice, falsehood and corruption is a ‘Chowkidar’ like the Prime Minister himself.
The tweet reads, “Your Chowkidar is standing firm and serving the nation. But, I am not alone. Everyone who is fighting corruption, dirt, social evils is a Chowkidar. Everyone working hard for the progress of India is a Chowkidar. Today, every Indian is saying #MainBhiChowkidar.
With this the BJP has officially launched its campaign for the Lok Sabha elections and taken the Congress head-on by twisting their favourite jibe of ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’ (The Watchman is a thief) into their campaign song.
The tweet also asks citizens to take the #MainBhiChowkidar pledge.
Congress president Rahul Gandhi has often directed his diatribes at the Prime Minister by calling him a ‘thief’ (Chowkidar Chor Hai) over crony capitalism, alleged irregularities in the Rafale deal and a slew of absconding businessmen tainted with bank frauds.
In rallies, public meet or press conferences, the Congress has long cornered the incumbent government over its failure or ‘complacent’ nature in helping embattled businessmen defaulting on bank payments flee the country.
Recently at the Sankalp rally in Patna, Prime Minister Narendra Modi rebutted the Congress’ repeated Chowkidar jibe and said, “These days a competition is underway to abuse the ‘Chowkidar‘, but you be assured, this ‘Chowkidar‘ of yours is as alert as ever.”
Addressing a rally in Karnataka’s Haveri recently, the Congress president intensified his attack on the PM and added that the Prime Minister is indeed a chowkidar but only for Anil Ambani and Gautam Adani.
“Modi keeps saying he has been battling corruption everywhere. But he himself is corruption personified. He is a ‘chowkdiar’ not for the people but for Ambani and Adani.”
He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi waived Rs 3.5 lakh crore loans of 15 people, including Ambani and Adani. “Five years ago, Modi said ‘Make me a chowkidar, not the Prime Minister’, the country voted for him. But Modi stole Rs 30,000 crore and put it in Ambani’s pocket,” he said.
