Kolkata: Only four phases of ongoing Lok Sabha elections have got over and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has already predicted the outcome for Uttar Pradesh. (Also read: ‘Bengal Will Offer PM Rosogullas of Clay,’ Says Mamata)
The state sends the maximum number of MPs, 80, to Lok Sabha so a good performance there matters. Also, some of BJP heavyweights, like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh fight their elections from UP. However, Banerjee says the saffron party would not be able to clinch even 17 seats out of 80.
Speaking to NDTV, she said, “The Congress will get seven to eight seats, Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav will do very well.”
In 2014, the BJP won 70 seats and its ally Apna Dal secured two seats in Uttar Pradesh.
Talking about the Mahagathbandhan, Banerjee claimed parties were holding talks. As far as PM Modi’s label of ‘khichdi’ for the Opposition was concerned, Banerjee asked what was wrong with khichdi. “You can have rice, dal or potato curry also. It is put together in khichdi,” she reasoned.
She also cautioned the PM and said, “He must know that he is the PM and when he is talking, people are listening. Political speech is also about culture. I have been called a goon and whatnot. But I don’t talk like that.”
She also said she couldn’t rate the PM even one…”He has become worse than fascist”.
On his part, the PM has claimed that 40 of TMC legislators were in touch with him and will desert Banerjee as soon as the results of the Lok Sabha elections were declared.
Trinamool Congress has accused him of horsetrading and filed a complaint with the Election Commission. TMC leader Derek O’Brien tweeted,
Earlier, he had tweeted, “Expiry Babu PM, let’s get this straight. Nobody will go with you. Not even one councillor. Are you election campaigning or horse trading! Your expiry date is near. Today, we are complaining to the Election Commission. Charging you with horse trading.”
