The All India Congress Committee on 5 May 2019, in a press statement, explicitly stated, “Mr Shakeel Ahmed, ex MP, has been suspended, with immediate effect, from the Congress Party for contesting as an Independent candidate from the Madhubani Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar against the party’s decision.”
Notably, Ahmed is a former Union minister who has represented Madhubani in the Lok Sabha.
On April 15, he had announced his displeasure over Mahagathbandhan’s (grand alliance) decision to field Badrinath Purve, a former RJD leader who is the candidate of the fledgling Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP), against Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Ashok Yadav from Madhubani Lok Sabha seat.
Speaking to the media, at his residence in Madhubani, Ahmed had said, “I have demanded the support of the party. If the party high command does not extend support, I will contest as an Independent.”
Madhubani seat will go to polls in fifth phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2019 on May 6, Monday. The counting of votes for the seat will be held on May 23. Hukum Dev Narayan Yadav of the BJP had won the seat in 2014 by garnering 3,58,040 votes.
