New Delhi: Days after Sunny Deol joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the Bollywood actor in national capital on Sunday. Soon after the meeting, PM took to micro-blogging site Twitter to post a picture with the actor. Alongside the picture, PM also quoted lines from the actor’s popular film ‘Gadar’.

“What struck me about Sunny Deol is his humility and deep passion for a better India. Happy to have met him today. We are all rooting for his victory in Gurdaspur. Hindustan Zindabad tha, hai, aur rahega,” PM Modi wrote with a picture of them smiling and shaking hands.

Sunny Deol joined the saffron party on April 23. Within a day, he was announced as the party’s candidate from Gurdaspur in Punjab. After joining BJP, he had said, “Like my father joined Atal Bihari Vajpayee, I have decided to join Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I want PM Modi for the next five years.”

Upon his joining, Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said, “He (Sunny Deol) understands the pulse of people and we are certain he will prove to be a strong leader.”

The actor-turned-politician held his first roadshow in Rajasthan’s Barmer on Saturday. A huge crowd gathered to catch a glimpse of Deol, who campaigned for Kailash Choudhary, BJP Lok Sabha candidate from Barmer.

Some of the people from the swelling crowd were seen gifting him his portrait. His famous dialogue from the movie ‘Gadar’ – “Hindustan zindabad tha, zindabad hai, zindabad rahega”, and  “Tareekh pe tareekh” from ‘Damini’ played in the background as the actor waved at the crowd and greeted them with handshakes.

Following Deol’s induction, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh mocked the actor saying that he is a ‘filmi fauji’. “Sunny Deol is a ‘filmi fauji,’ while I am a ‘real fauji,’ Captain Amarinder Singh had said.

Punjab will vote in a single phase, on May 19, the last day of the seven-phased national election. The results of will be announced on May 23.
