New Delhi: Income Tax officials and the Election Commission’s static surveillance team on Tuesday conducted raids at the house of Kanimozhi, the daughter of former chief minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief M Karunanidhi.
Kanimozhi, a Rajya Sabha MP is contesting the April 18 Lok Sabha elections from Thoothukudi against the BJP’s state unit chief Tamilisai Soundararajan. Reports claimed that the I-T Department is yet to execute a warrant.
Raising questions on the timing of the raids, DMK President and Kanimozhi’s brother MK Stalin lambasted accused PM Modi of deliberately using the poll body. “Crores and crores of rupees are kept in Tamilisai Soundararajan’s(BJP TN Chief) residence, why no raids there? Modi is using IT,CBI,Judiciary and now EC to interfere in elections. They are doing this as they fear losing,” Stalin claimed.
On April 12, IT officials had conducted massive searches at multiple locations in Tamil Nadu- including Chennai, Namakkal and Tirunelveli and had seized Rs 15 crore cash. The raids were carried out on suspicion of illegal cash dumps, in view of the Lok Sabha elections 2019.
Polls in the 39 seats of Tamil Nadu and the lone seat in Puducherry would be held on April 18, the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections. The counting of votes will be held on May 23.
