New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday aimed strong-worded jibes at the Congress and evoked the party’s past to mock general secretary Priyanka Gandhi’s recent visit to Rae Bareli, where she was captured playing with snakes while interacting with snake charmers.

Addressing a rally in Rajasthan’s Bikaner, Prime Minister Modi said, “Ek daur tha jab Congress ke namdaar videshi mehmanon ke samne saanp-nevlon ko nacha kar khush hote the. Aaj ye namdaar parivaar ki chauthi peedi bhi yahi kaam kar rahi hai. Ye chauthi peedi aaj bhi saanp-saperon ke khel dikha kar vote maang rahi hai. (There was a time when Congress leaders would entertain foreign delegates by perfomances of snake charmers and even now their fourth generation is trying to get votes by playing with snakes.)”
He further trained his guns and said that India is moving ahead using the computer mouse but alas, the Congress is still busy playing with snakes.
The Prime Minister’s remarks were an apparent dig at India’s first PM post-Independence Jawaharhal Nehru, who was photographed talking to then US First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy at a party, while a snake charmer performed in front of them.
Recently, videos of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra interacting with snake charmers while playing with their snakes also went viral during her visit to Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli.
Priyanka had gone to the Hansa ka Purwa village in her mother Sonia Gandhi’s Lok Sabha constituency to campaign for her. The Congress workers and security personnel accompanying her were taken aback when she picked up a Cobra while chatting with its charmer.
“This is the first time that any ‘neta’ has visited our village and even shown the courage to touch a snake. In fact, whenever we have shown them snakes, they think we are doing it for money. But Priyanka is so fearless and she treated the snake like one treats a puppy,” said Kishori Lal, a snake charmer.
Later, Priyanka addressed a number of street-corner meetings where she criticised the BJP candidate Dinesh Pratap Singh who had claimed to be a loyal Congress leader till he was given a BJP ticket.
