Lok Sabha Elections 2019: AIADMK Seal Tamil Nadu Deal With BJP, PMK; to Contest in 25, 3 And 7 Seats Respectively

New Delhi: After sealing an alliance with staunch critic Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), the ruling AIADMK team up with BJP for the forthcoming Lok Sabha and Tamil Nadu by-elections. While the AIADMK will contest on 25 seats, BJP and PMK will fight in 5 and 7 constituencies respectively. Tamil Nadu has a total of 39 Lok Sabha seats.

Under the deal, the BJP would also support AIADMK in the bypolls expected to 21 assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu, Panneerselvam said.

“AIADMK and BJP will have an alliance for Lok Sabha elections which will be a mega and winning alliance. BJP will contest on 5 seats in Lok Sabha elections and we will be contesting together in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry,” said Tamil Nadu Deputy CM and AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam while announcing the alliance.

Meanwhile, BJP leader and Union Minister Piyush Goyal exuded confidence of winning all seats in Tamil Nadu as a mark of respect to late TN CM J Jayalalithaa. “All the parties in alliance in Tamil Nadu will strengthen NDA and our target is 140 seats. All will be won by NDA. We start our campaign, we will sweep Tamil Nadu as a mark of respect to J Jayalalithaa. J Jayalalithaa was a leader. My last interaction with her was in July 2016 and we discussed power sector reforms in Tamil Nadu. She was loving, caring and we had fruitful discussion,” Goyal said.

The development comes hours after the AIADMK announced a poll alliance with the PMK.  It was also decided that the PMK would be allocated a Rajya Sabha seat. A formal agreement on the poll alliance was signed between the leadership of AIADMK and the PMK at a city hotel.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the PMK, which was part of the BJP-led rainbow alliance of seven parties, contested from eight Lok Sabha seats and won Dharmapuri constituency. The BJP, which also contested the same number, won from Kanyakumari. By clinching the deal, AIADMK has stolen a march over the opposition led front, led by arch rival DMK.
