Chennai: Congress President Rahul Gandhi interacted with the students of Stella Maris College for Women in Chennai on Wednesday. When asked about the measures the Congress party would take if it comes to power,  Rahul Gandhi said, “You can’t have a fearful atmosphere in the country and expect economic growth.”

Speaking on the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the Congress chief stated that it is very complicated because there are five different layers of tax. Rahul Gandhi added, “We are going to reform the GST and make it once a single tax.” Referring to the economic offenders and fugitives of the country namely Nirav Modi, Anil Ambani, Vijay Mallya and Mehul Choksi, Gandhi said,” We also want to take the money that is going to 15-17 people like Nirav Modi and open the banking system to entrepreneurs like you. How many jobs do you think Nirav Modi created for India?”

Explaining the ideological battle in the country Rahul Gandhi said, “One ideology is a unifying ideology which says that all people of the country should live together and shouldn’t be dominated by one idea.” He added, “The other ideology represented by the current government and PM where they believe that one idea should be imposed on our country. They have a particular view about the role of women in our society, different languages and cultures are inferior to one centralising culture and idea.”

Posing a counter question to the students Rahul Gandhi said, “How many times have you seen the Prime Minister of India standing in the middle of 3000 women like this? How many times have you seen him standing here like this being open to any question from anybody?” It must be noted that the Prime Minister visited Tamil Nadu on January 10 and addressed the BJP booth workers in the state.

Later in the day, the Congress president is slated to launch the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) campaign in the Kanyakumari parliamentary constituency at Nagercoil district. This campaign for the DMK-led alliance will be Rahul Gandhi’s first-ever meeting in Tamil Nadu since he took reigns of the Congress party.

In the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2019, Congress candidate H Vasanthakumar will contest against BJP’s candidate Pon Radhakrishnan who is the Union minister of state. Leaders of Congress allies including DMK President MK Stalin will share the dais with Gandhi at Nagercoil in Kanyakumari district. The Congress will fight the elections as part of DMK-led front that includes MDMK, CPI, CPI-M, VCK, IUML, IJK and KDMK. It may be recalled Stalin had proposed Gandhi’s name as the Prime Ministerial candidate. The Congress has got nine Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and the lone seat in Puducherry.
