Kolkata: Many Trinamool Congress leaders are expected to cross over to the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of upcoming Lok Sabha 2019. As per sources, the top choice would be Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) mayor and minister Sovan Chatterjee and present mayor of Bidhannagar Municipality Sabyasachi Dutta.
This news comes after a dinner meeting took place between BJP leader Mukul Roy and TMC legislator Sabyasachi Dutta at the latter’s residence on Friday. The meeting is known to have gone on for at least two hours.
Reports have it that TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee has asked her top minister Mayor Firhad Hakim to examine disciplinary action Sabyasachi Dutta following his meeting with Roy. Furthermore, an emergency meeting has also been called by the TMC of all the councillors of Salt Lake area today to mull over and initiate disciplinary action against Dutta. However, it is not confirmed whether Dutta will take part in the meeting.
Meanwhile, after meeting with Dutta on Friday, Mukul Roy had said, “We are like brothers. I have been to his place several times earlier including once about 10 days ago and on another occasion about two months ago.” On the other hand, Dutta said, “Anyone who I share a cordial relationship with is welcome to my residence. If a senior person like him wanted to come over, would I have refused to meet him? It has nothing to do with politics.” Both the leaders chose to remain close-mouthed about the matter.
Notably, Dutta had remained absent in TMC party activities in the last 2-3 months, fuelling talks about him joining the BJP.
On Saturday, Dutta was also summoned to a party district office for an explanation regarding his meeting with Mukul Roy. However, the TMC legislator called it off, citing health issues.
Further, a senior BJP leader has urged to wait until the notification is out. “There are strict instructions to wait till the notification so that the state government cannot slap false cases to implicate these leaders. Sovan and Baisakhi are likely to join BJP from Delhi and either of them would be in the fray from Diamond Harbour constituency against Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee,” the leader said.
