New Delhi: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MP Sher Singh Ghubaya has resigned from the primary membership of the party, ANI reported on Monday. Ghubaya had already been suspended by the party. (Also read: Karnataka Congress MLA Resigns, May Join BJP)
The Lok Sabha elections now promise to get interesting in Ferozepur as the seat has been a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) stronghold for 25 years and its Ghubaya, the sitting two-time MP, has left the party. So SAD must be looking for a replacement.
Ghubaya, who reports say is eyeing a Congress ticket too, might even fight as in Independent if that doesn’t happen. The MP belongs to the Rai Sikh community which is a dominant vote bank in the segment.
“I have devoted my life to the people of my constituency, especially the poor. I will contest for sure,” Ghubaya was quoted as saying by a daily. Reports suggest that he has met the Congress high command over the issue. His son is already a Congress MLA from Fazilka.
However, the Congress also has a long list of aspirants to pick from.
Meanwhile for the SAD, since Ghubaya is not an option anymore, the party would be looking for a strong replacement though reports are abuzz that they might field two-time sitting Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal from here.
Another option for the SAD could be Badal loyalist Janmeja Singh Sekhon who has been a two-time MLA from Ferozepur Cantonment.
The SAD has not had it easy in the state as the Congress swept the Panchayat polls held in December 2018. It alleged that the polls were rigged and blamed the Congress for a complete hijack of the panchayat elections. It said that this amounted to the murder of democracy and lambasted the state Election Commission for failing to hold free and fair elections.
