New Delhi: In a redux of April 3 rally at Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur, actor-turned-politician Jaya Prada on Saturday, yet again, implored Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan to explain his bitter attitude towards her in the past. Addressing a rally in Rampur, the two-time Rampur MP (2004, 2009) said, “Azam Khan sahab maine aapko bhai kaha lekin aapne mujhe behn ke naam se bad’dua di, aapne mujhe zalil kiya… Isliye main Rampur chod ke gai.”
When Jaya Prada joined the BJP recently, Khan was quoted as calling her a dancer or ‘naachne-gaane wali’ in a disparaging tone.
Taking him on, Jaya Prada, who the BJP has fielded from Rampur against the SP-BSP combine candidate Azam Khan, further explained how she was forced to abandon Rampur back in 2009 because of constant harassment from Khan. She said, “Maine Mulayam Singh ji ko bhi bataya ki meri ashleel tasveerein Rampur main ghuma rahe hain, mujhe bachaiye, lekin Rampur main kisi neta ne mujhe bachane ki koshish nahi ki…”
She referred to an incident in 2009 when she had accused Azam Khan of circulating her ‘objectionable’ pictures in the constituency- against which she had also approached then Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav, but he reportedly did not help her.
Jaya Prada had joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1994 to enter politics. Later she joined the Samajwadi Party but was expelled due to anti-party activities in 2010.
The actor-turned-politician has long accused Azam Khan of blocking her return to politics. She has in the past claimed that she quit politics out of fear of Khan.
This Lok Sabha election is set to see a high voltage drama in the Rampur Lok Sabha constituency as friends-turned-foes Jaya Prada and Azam Khan are set to battle it out from the BJP and SP-BSP camps respectively.
