New Delhi: Congress president Rahul Gandhi and party general secretary for UP (east) Priyanka Gandhi on Sunday hit back at Narendra Modi over his ‘Bhrashtachari No 1’ jibe at their father and later former PM Rajiv Gandhi.
While Rahul asserted that PM Modi is projecting his inner beliefs about himself onto his father, Priyanka said that the remark was an insult to Rajiv Gandhi’s martyrdom.
“Modi Ji, the battle is over. Your Karma awaits you. Projecting your inner beliefs about yourself onto my father won’t protect you. All my love and a huge hug. Rahul,” tweeted Rahul.
Echoing similar statements, Rahul’s sister and Congress’ general secretary Priyanka Gandhi said,”The prime minister, who is seeking votes in the name of martyrs, yesterday disrespected the martyrdom of a noble man. People in Amethi will give a befitting reply for whom Rajiv Gandhi sacrificed his life. Yes Modi ji, this nation never forgives deception,” her tweet in Hindi read.
Earlier in the day, former Union Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram had slammed Modi over his ‘Bhrashtachari No 1’ jibe at Rajiv Gandhi saying PM has crossed all limits of propriety and decency”.
Chidambaram stated that the charges against late former PM Rajiv Gandhi were thrown out by the Delhi High Court and the BJP government had decided not to file an appeal in the Supreme court against the HC’s decision.
“Does Mr Modi read anything at all? Does he know that the charge against Mr Rajiv Gandhi was thrown out by the High Court, Delhi as “completely baseless? Does Mr Modi know that a BJP government decided not to file an appeal to the SC against the HC judgment? asked the former Finance Minister.
Sam Pitroda, Indian Overseas Congress chief also hit out at PM over his remarks against Rajiv Gandhi. “We were hurt by what PM said about Rajiv Gandhi yesterday. Normally PM of a country speaks for the people, it’s a huge accountability. PM can’t speak nonsense,” ANI quoted Pitroda as saying.
Earlier on Saturday, while addressing a rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh, PMModi had launched a scathing attack on Congress president Rahul Gandhi saying that the life of his father, late former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, ended as ‘Bhrastachari number 1’.
“Your father was termed ‘Mr Clean’ by his courtiers, but his life ended as ‘Bhrashtachari No 1’ (corrupt number 1),” Modi said, in an apparent reference to the Bofors case in 1980s, in which the late former PM was accused of receiving kickbacks from Swedish defence manufacturer Bofors for the sale of its artillery gun to India.
