New Delhi: Congress in-charge for Uttar Pradesh (East) Priyanka Gandhi on Friday took a sharp jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing a rally in Adilpur, 48 km from Ayodhya.
“I asked people if PM visits villages in Varanasi, I got the reply ‘he does not visit’. I was surprised because his publicity is such that I thought he must have been doing something. He visited the whole world and hugged everyone, but didn’t hug his own people,” Priyanka quipped. Priyanka Gandhi’s comments stirred another storm today, since a day before she had taunted one of her party workers by saying “Can’t I contest election from Varanasi” when urged to fight the Lok Sabha election from Rae Bareli.
Her remarks on Thursday came during an interactive meeting with party booth workers, block presidents, gram panchayat and nagar panchayat heads at a guest house in Rae Bareli, about six km from the district headquarters. Rae Bareli is her mother and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s Lok Sabha constituency.
Earlier in the day addressing a meet in Faizabad, Priyanka said, “BJP has led a campaign of lies these past five years. They are anti-poor, anti-farmer, anti-people… Did they transfer Rs 15 lakh in your bank accounts, as they promised.”
The political circles are abuzz with a high voltage contest this Lok Sabha election from Uttar Pradesh after Priyanka hinted that she might take the plunge from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency- Varanasi. The Congress, the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) are yet to declare their candidates from the Varanasi seat yet.
Earlier in the day, Priyanka said that she will contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections if the party leadership asks her while adding that she has been given the key task of strengthening her party in the state.
“If my party asks me to contest the polls, I will definitely do so. But my personal wish is to work for the party’s organisation as a lot of work needs to be done,” the Congress leader said at a media interaction in Lucknow.
