Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Saturday claimed that PM Narendra Modi included his community in the Other Backward Caste (OBC) category for political gains. “PM always belonged to upper caste but during his tenure in Gujarat, he included his community in the OBC category for political gains. Modi tried his best to get votes in the name of backward classes,” said Mayawati while addressing a press conference at her residence in Lucknow.
She further said that the PM had levelled baseless allegations against her and former UP chief minister and Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav. “Today in Kannauj PM Modi said that we (Mayawati and Akhilesh) had called him ‘neech’ but we never said so. His accusations are baseless. With due respect, we had always considered him someone belonging to upper caste,” BSP supremo stated.
She went on to add, “I did nothing wrong when I said that Narendra Modi was not backward like Mulayam (Singh Yadav) and Akhilesh (Yadav). I hope that after my press conference today, Narendra Modi will stop doing caste politics.”
Mayawati’s remarks on caste politics come in the wake of PM Modi’s rally which was held in UP’s Kannauj earlier on Saturday. PM Modi had attacked the BSP-SP-RLD alliance in the state for speaking about caste and ignoring the critical issue of terrorism.
“I have never spoken about my caste, but ‘mahamilawati’ people are forcing me to speak about it. I am not backward but was born in extreme backwardness. Don’t drag me into this caste politics,” Modi had said during his rally in Kannauj. He further said, “I hail from an extremely backward caste, my caste is so small that there are only two-three houses of my caste in my village.”
Modi had also attacked the BSP chief for seeking the support of Samajwadi Party (SP). “Behenji is happily asking for votes for the Samajwadi Party (SP), just for power, just to defeat Modi, you are hugging the people who abuse Babasaheb?” PM Modi said. Notably, the Prime Minister has always shown his displeasure over SP-BSP alliance and maintained that this friendship will come to an abrupt end after the Lok Sabha elections.
