New Delhi: BJP may have fielded Sunny Deol of the dhai-kilo-ka-haath fame from Gurdaspur in Punjab for Lok Sabha elections but that hasn’t rattle too many in Congress. (Also read: ‘Pro-incumbency Wave Being Seen For First Time,’ Says PM)
Speaking to ANI, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh said,”He (Sunny Deol) is a filmy ‘fauji’ while I am a real fauji. We will defeat him, he is no threat to either Sunil Jakhar (Congress Lok Sabha candidate from Gurdaspur) or Congress.”
When he formally joined BJP, Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, “He (Sunny Deol) understands the pulse of people and we are certain he will prove to be a strong leader.”
If reports are to be believed, BJP chief Amit Shah met the ‘Gadar’ actor in a bid to convince him to contest from Amritsar Lok Sabha seat. Addressing media, Deol said, “The way my Papa (Dharmendra) worked with and supported Atal ji, I am here today to work with and support Modi ji. My work will do the talking.”
Bollywood actor Dharmendra was associated with BJP in the past. His step-mother Hema Malini is BJP MP from Mathura and is defending her seat this time from the same seat.
Meanwhile, Deol’s candidature has left ticket aspirant Kavita Khanna, wife of late Union Minister and four-time MP Vinod Khanna, feeling betrayed.
“I also feel that the wishes of people who wanted me as their MP were ignored,” she had told PTI.
She added, “I am weighing all my options. I have not decided anything (yet). I have not taken any decision on any issue.”
“I have worked here for 20 years. When Vinod ji was unwell, I used to meet people of the constituency. People wanted me as their MP,” she said.
At a rally in Gurdaspur in January this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recalled the efforts of Vinod Khanna for developing the area. “Vinod Khanna made efforts for the progress of this place. He wanted to see modern and prosperous Gurdaspur, we have to realise his dream,” PM Modi had said.
Currently, the Gurdaspur constituency is represented by Congress MP Sunil Jakhar who won the seat in the 2017 by-poll, which was necessitated by Khanna’s death in April that year.
Jakhar had defeated BJP candidate Swaran Salaria. Then also, Kavita was among the frontrunners for the BJP ticket during the 2017 by-poll, but the party chose businessman Salaria over her.
Vinod Khanna had won the seat in 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2014.
