New Delhi: Poonam Sinha, wife of Congress leader Shatrughan Sinha joined Samajwadi Party (SP) in presence of Dimple Yadav on Tuesday. She will be contest the Lok Sabha elections 2019 against Union Minister Rajnath Singh from Lucknow parliamentary constituency SP-BSP-RLD alliance candidate.

“Poonam Sinha (wife of Shatrughan Sinha) will be the SP-BSP-RLD candidate from Lucknow. She will file nomination on April 18 (the last day of nomination for the fifth phase of polling).We appeal to the Congress that do not field your candidate from here so that BJP can be defeated,” said SP leader Ravid, as Mehrotra, confirming her candidature from Lucknow.

If Congress won’t field a candidate from Lucknow, it would pave the way for a one-to-one face off between Rajnath Singh and Poonam Sinha.

Earlier in the day, Union Home minister Rajnath Singh filed his nomination papers for the Lucknow Lok Sabha seat after holding a roadshow in the Uttar Pradesh capital, where BJP supporters turned up in large numbers and showered flower petals on him.

Accompanied by Uttar Pradesh BJP chief Mahendra Nath Pandey, Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma and former Union minister Kalraj Mishra, Singh submitted his election affidavit to Lucknow District Magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma.

Lucknow, a stronghold of ruling BJP will vote on May 6. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Rajanth Singh had defeated Congress candidate Rita Bahuguna Joshi from the Lok Sabha seat by garnering 55.7 per cent of the total 10,06,483 votes polled. He had won in all the five assembly segments of the constituency.
