Lucknow: Rebel SP leader and Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohia) chief Shivpal Yadav will contest against his nephew Akshay Yadav in the forthcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2019. Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party, which announced a list of candidates for 31 seats, included Shivpal Yadav’s name from Firozabad,  a stronghold of Akhilesh Yadav-led SP.

Besides, the party has also announced candidates from Gautam Buddh Nagar, Fatehpur Sikri, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Hardoi, Misrikh, Unnao, Farrukhabad, Kanpur, Akbarpur, Mohanlalganj, Bahraich, Kaiserganj, Sultanpur, Ambedkar Nagar, Basti, Lalganj, Jaunpur, Maharajganj, Robertsganj and Sambhal.

Notably, the Samajwadi Party has won the seat five times since 1999. The current MP from Firozabad is Akshay Yadav, son of Shivpal’s estranged brother Ram Gopal Yadav, SP’s Principal General Secretary.  Earlier the Congress party, which won the by-election from Firozabad in 2009 said that it won’t field its candidate from the Lok Sabha seat this time.

Shivpal, who is a sitting SP MLA from Jaswant Nagar seat in Etawah, quit the Samajwadi Party over not getting “due respect in the party”. He is stated to have influence in Firozabad and the adjoining districts and is seen as a strong contender against nephew Akshay.

Earlier in the day, in a joint presser with Peace Party chief Dr Ayub, Shivpal announced the alliance for upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha Polls. The Peace party is said to have a good voter base in constituencies like Siddharthnagar and Santkabirnagar.

Uttar Pradesh will go to polls during all seven phases of Lok Sabha Elections 2019 which will begin from April 11. The counting of votes will take place on May 23.
