Mumbai: Bollywood actor Urmila Matondkar will contest Lok Sabha Elections 2019 from Mumbai North parliamentary constituency on Congress ticket. The announcement was made on Friday through a notification duly signed by Mukul Wasnik, the General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee.
“The Central Election Committee has approved the candidature of Smt. Urmila Matondkar as Congress candidate to contest the ensuing general elections to the Lok Sabha from 26 – Mumbai North Parliamentary constituency of Maharashtra,” the AICC circular read.
Matondkar’s formidable rival would be Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) incumbent MP Gopal Shetty in the constituency, which was once regarded a BJP bastion.
Urmila Matondkar joined the Congress in New Delhi on Wednesday afternoon. Welcomed into the party by top Congress leaders, including party president Rahul Gandhi, the 45-year-old actress dismissed all apprehensions and had said: “I am here to stay – even after the elections.”
Mumbai’s six Lok Sabha constituencies are going to the polls on April 29, along with 17 others in the state’s fourth phase of elections.
Incidentally, besides Mumbai North-West (now, Mumbai North-Central), Mumbai North is the only Lok Sabha constituency in the country’s commercial capital which has elected a well-known film personality.
The late union minister and actor Sunil Dutt had been elected from Mumbai North-West five times and the baton later passed on to his daughter Priya Dutt.
The Lok Sabha Elections 2019 will be held in seven phases beginning April 11 and concluding May 19. The counting of votes will be conducted on May 23.
