Karnataka BJP leader Srinivasa Prasad said, “LTTE planned and assassinated Rajiv Gandhi. He did not die due to corruption allegations. Nobody believes that… even I don’t believe it. I have a lot of respect for Modi ji but it was not necessary for him to speak against Rajiv Gandhi.”

Batting for the former prime minister, Prasad said, “Rajiv Gandhi took bigger responsibilities at a young age. Tallest personalities in politics like Vajpayee ji have spoken many good things about Rajiv Gandhi.”

The PM’s attack on Rajiv has raised the hackles of many but the late leader’s children, Congress President Rahul and party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra dealt with it in their characteristic ways.

Priyanka chose to call it an insult to her dad’s martyrdom but Rahul tweeted, “Modi Ji, the battle is over. Your Karma awaits you. Projecting your inner beliefs about yourself onto my father won’t protect you. All my love and a huge hug. Rahul.”

PM Modi even challenged the Congress to fight the remaining two phases of the Lok Sabha elections on the issues of Bofors and Bhopal Gas Tragedy; both of them had happened during Rajiv’s regime.

However, Priyanka shot back by asking why the remaining two phases shouldn’t be fought on issues of farmers, GST and women’s security.

The Congress has submitted in the Supreme Court that PM’s remarks to “malign and tarnish” Rajiv’s image was ”obscene”. In an additional affidavit, the party said Modi’s words, “Your father may have been declared Mr Clean by his courtiers. But he died as ‘Bhrashtachari No.1’ is “derogatory” to the high office he held. It was both “unfortunate and unbecoming” a statement for a Prime Minister to make.

The Congress has lodged a complaint with the EC against Modi’s remarks.
