New Delhi: Congress Bhopal candidate Digvijaya Singh on Thursday mocked the BJP’s pick against him from the constituency when he insinuated that Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur was the last choice left with the BJP to erect against him in the Lok Sabha election contest.

Addressing an election rally, Digvijaya Singh said, “BJP couldn’t find a single member from their party who could fight me? So they got Sadhvi ji. Good, I welcome her. EC has barred her for 3 days from campaigning, though we want to her campaign and keep giving statements, it helps us.”

The Election Commission on Wednesday barred Sadhvi Pragya Thakur from campaigning for 72 hours starting 6 a.m on Thursday, for seeking votes on religious lines thereby violating the model code of conduct (MCC).

Digvijaya’s comments are a dig at multiple controversial statements made by Pragya Singh Thakur since her candidature from Bhopal was announced. In addition, she was also served three notices by the Election Commission on various occasions for violating the Model Code of Conduct.

She was recently served one for calling her political rival a ‘terrorist’ during an election campaign in Sehore district of Madhya Pradesh. The BJP leader had allegedly said that a sanyasi (ascetic) is needed to eliminate a ‘terrorist’. Taking cognisance of which, the poll body asked for a comprehensive report from the Collector on her statements. Earlier in April, the ECI had issued a show-cause notice to her over the remark that she was proud of her participation in the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. Thakur made the controversial remark while speaking to a television channel.

And the first notice was served to her when she said that former Mumbai ATS chief and martyr Hemant Karkare, who died in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, died due to her curse. Addressing BJP workers, she had claimed that Karkare died during the attack as she had “cursed” him for torturing her when he probed the blast case as chief of the Anti-Terrorism Squad.
