Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and party leader Abu Azmi raked controversy after making controversial comments about women and rapists. Mulayam Singh said that boys commit mistakes but they should not be hanged for rape. While Abu Asim Azmi giving solution to stop rapes in India said that any woman goes with a man with or without her consent should be hanged. These two are not first who have given such kind of ingenious advices. There are lot more in the list but this is not because that they are gender bias. Here are the four controversial comments made by prominent “females” about “woman”.
Shiela Dikshit: Former chief minister of Delhi and current governor of Kerala, Shiela Dikshit came under attack by politicians and woman activist when she said, “One should not be adventurous being a woman.” Her comment came out after the murder of a girl in Delhi. Delhi is at it worst when it comes to woman’s safety. Being a CM of Delhi, Shiela Dikshit’s remarks made lot of buzz and shattered her woman-friendly image.
Mamta Benerjee: Another lady Chief Minister came up with bizarre reasoning for the increasing number of rape cases in the country. West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamta Benerjee said rape cases are on rise because men and women interact freely. “Earlie, if men and women would hold hands, they would get caught by parents and reprimanded but now everything is so open. It’s like an open market with open options. Rapes happen because men and women interact freely.’
Mamta Sharma: NCW chairperson: From a chairperson of National Commission for Women (NCW) you would expect that she understands woman related issues very well. But As a chairperson NCW Mamta Sharma raised questions about the way of dressings of women. “Women should be careful about the way they dress because such incidents are a result of blindly aping the west. This is eroding our culture and causing such crimes (rapes) to happen.” She said.
Asha Mirje: Maharashtra state Women’s Commission member and Nationalist Congress party leader Asha Mirje made her remark over Nirbhaya case and suggested advises to woman how to dress. Asha Mirje claimed that Nirbhaya was herself responsible for her rape. She said, “Did Nirbhaya really have go to watch a movie at 11 in the night with her friend? Take the Shakti Mills gang rape. Why did the victim go to such an isolated spot at 9pm?” Asha Mirje did not stop over this giving her “precious” advice to women she said, “Girls should be very careful about what they wear and at what time they move out in the city. Their body language should not invite the attention of the potential rapists lurking around in the streets.”
Though we claim to live in a modern era where we have broken the chains of orthodox culture but our politicians and even women commission’s member are not. Instead of providing proper security to women they believe that girls’ way of clothing is the major cause of rape incidents.
