Condom is a small rubber balloon like thing which is the most popular birth control measure and it also helps prevents sexually transmitted diseases like AIDS. With the help of this small thing India has shown a tremendous improvement with respect to getting rid of AIDS. Comparing with the statistics of 2007, India has improved from 0.33% to 0.28% with respect to AIDS in adults. However, its people like Dr. Harsh Vardhan who beg to differ.
According to the recent statement passed on by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, “Condom promises safe sex, but the safest sex is through the faithfulness in one’s partner”. I believe our health minister was in complete senses when he came up with this statement, considering the current scenarios. Obviously in 21st century, and in a globalization era, you expect your partner to be completely faithful, regardless of the portrayal of a relationship on television shows like Jerry Springer and Emotional Attyachaar which depict the unfaithful side of human nature. Moreover, Dr. Harsh Vardhan Suggests, instead of Sex Education, the thing that Indian Education should stress on is Value Education. True Story! If you find yourself diagnosed with HIV, the first thing you need to do is get blessings from your elders and light up a DIYA! Because apparently that works! Consider it as badly chosen words, or stereotypic judgement, I bet most of the people out there would call it a stupid mentality, coming out from our own health minister. Its really sad to see the leaders of our nation have such backward mentality which would fail to sustain in the environment where scientific facts talk louder than urban myths.
To sum it up, considering the fact that we live in the 21st century where Indian mentality shouldn’t be overpowered by Indian traditions, its leaders like Dr. Harsh Vardhan who depict the backward mentality of our country. Dr. Vardhan has clearly not considered tie growing population of our country and how condom can help prevent it. It’s high time our ministers draw a thin line between tradition an facts.
