Reena Tanwar had married Mithun Tanwar five years ago and the couple have a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter. She was four months pregnant with her second child at the time of her death, police said.
Reena’s family has alleged that her in-laws constantly tortured her over dowry and kept demanding money, and eventually murdered her in the most brutal fashion.
“We sent money to her in-law on several occasions to resolve the matter, but they never seemed satiated and eventually murdered her along with her unborn child,” said a relative of the victim.
He said that someone from the Tanda Khurd village made a call to the family, informing them that Reena was murdered and was being cremated in a haste.
“When we arrived there with the police, her mutilated body was lying on the smoldering pyre and the in-laws had fled,” he said.
Meanwhile, police said that they have acted on a complaint lodged by kin of the deceased woman who alleged she was her in-laws.
A senior official said Reena’s brother found from villagers that his sister was being cremated, following which he approached the police.
“Brother of the deceased Reena Tanwar lodged a complaint stating his sister was killed by her in-laws who used to harass her, and her last rites were being conducted without informing her parents,” said Kalipeeth police station in-charge Rajnish Sirotia.
Sirotia said police rushed to the crematio grounds and pulled out the half-burnt body from the funeral pyre and sent it for postmortem, adding that the victim’s in-laws have denied the allegations, claiming that she died after being bitten by some poisonous animal.
Further action will be dependent on the findings of the postmortem report, he added.
