Mumbai: The Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) (Shiv Sena-UBT) on Monday demanded a law for keeping aside 50 per cent of flats for Marathi people in all new buildings constructed in Mumbai. This measure was proposed to ensure the survival of Marathis and to address their declining population.
Anil D. Parab, the leader of SS-UBT and a candidate for the Mumbai Graduates Constituency in the Legislative Council elections, stated that he had introduced a private bill concerning this matter last year.
“The bill was introduced to resolve the problems of housing faced by the Marathi-speaking people in the city and their declining population as they are deprived of a home on grounds of either religion or their (non-vegetarian) food habits. Accordingly, I feel there is an urgent need for such a law for the Marathis,” Parab told media persons.
He also mentioned the numerous complaints about Marathi people being denied housing and expressed hope that the MahaYuti government will address the demands for affordable housing for the local populace in the upcoming legislative session.
The current estimated population of Mumbai stands at approximately 1.80 crore, with nearly 40 percent residing in various slums throughout the city and its suburbs. Meanwhile, the population of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is estimated to be around 2.61 crore.
