Thane: In the latest development in the Badlapur sexual abuse case, the prime accused Akshay Shinde on Monday succumbed to injuries in a retaliatory firing after he snatched a gun from a cop and started firing at the police vehicle. According to police, Shinde was being taken to Badlapur from Taloja jail as part of the investigation.

“When the police vehicle reached Mumbra bypass, he snatched a policeman’s gun and opened fire at an assistant police inspector in the vehicle. He was shot in retaliatory firing,” PTI reported citing Thane Police.

Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said “His (Akshay Shinde) ex-wife has lodged a complaint of sexual assault, police along with a warrant was taking him for investigation. He snatched the police gun and fired on police personnel and in the air too…. Doctors will declare it later but the preliminary information that we have is that he has died.”

“If he had attacked the police, wouldn’t the police do the self-defence? It’s wrong to create any issue out of it” Fadnavis added.

Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde said, “He (Akshay Shinde) was taken for investigation as his ex-wife has registered a case of sexual assault. He fired on a police personnel, Nilesh More who got injured and has been admitted to hospital. Police in self-defence took that action. More information will come out after investigation…”

In August, a man aged 24 was arrested amidst allegations of sexual assault on two little girls, both four years old, in a school restroom situated in Badlapur, Thane. This unsettling incident triggered widespread demonstrations throughout Maharashtra. The man, employed as an attendant in the school, found himself in handcuffs shortly after. Based on an initial examination report, it appears that the poor toddlers, three and four years of age, endured ongoing abuse over a heartbreaking 15-day period with clear indicators of injuries to their physical well-being.

The person under scrutiny for the crime is supposedly a habitual criminal who was working on temporary terms without a thorough background check. He had unrestrained access to all corners of the school, including the less-frequented female washrooms, and no ID card to identify himself.

In reaction to this incident, the government of Maharashtra has sworn to enact rigorous actions against the wrongdoer and has put together a Special Investigation Team (SIT). Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, has confirmed the case will be processed in a swift manner in a Fast Track court. The SIT also arranged a lineup for identification, where the victims were successful in identifying the suspect.
