Mumbai is undergoing a transformative inter-linking project with the development of five ring roads. The first of these roads will incorporate the Orange Gate tunnel, connecting Freeway with Coastal Road at Marine Drive, enhancing connectivity within the city. These strategic developments aim to decongest the urban area and establish better links with neighbouring regions such as Thane, Palghar, and Alibaug.

The subsequent three ring roads will further bridge the gap between south Mumbai and its suburbs, Mumbai and Thane, and the city with Palghar-Alibaug regions. However, the northernmost ring road’s progress may face delays, given the ongoing planning stages of the Virar-Alibaug multimodal corridor, according to a report in TOI.

“The new roads will help alleviate traffic congestion on the city’s internal roads by providing alternative circular routes,” said Sanjay Mukherjee, commissioner, MMRDA. “Also, it has been very difficult to provide a dedicated bus lane on the existing roads but on the new roads that are being built there will be a dedicated bus lane and bus stops like on Coastal Road.”

Connecting Thane via ring roads will be a key factor in decongesting internal roads. The extension of Eastern Freeway, the construction of Thane Coastal Road, and Ghodbunder Road developments will be crucial in connecting Mumbai’s north to Thane and Eastern Freeway.

Below are some of the roads and flyovers that already exist, while others are being planned:

The Eastern Freeway leads to an underground tunnel at Orange Gate on Shahid Bhagat Singh Road, linking to the Coastal Road on Marine Drive, and further connecting to the Worli-Sewri Link Road, eventually merging with the Bandra Worli Sea Link.

The Coastal Road seamlessly integrates with the road from Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to the Santacruz Chembur Link Road (SCLR), leading to the Eastern Freeway at Ghatkopar and extending towards Chheda Nagar-Anand Nagar.

From the Bandra Worli Sea Link, the route progresses to the Bandra Versova Sea Link, connecting to the Western Express Highway and the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road before joining the Eastern Freeway extension at Airoli Junction.

The Bandra-Versova Sea Link extends to Dahisar Bhayandar, passing through an elevated road on Thane Creek, Fountain Junction, and Gaimukh, eventually linking to the Thane Coastal Road and the Eastern Freeway extension towards Ghatkopar and South Mumbai.

The Virar-Alibaug multimodal corridor, a significant 126km expressway with 8-14 lanes, plays a pivotal role in connecting Navghar-Balavali within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

This comprehensive network of roads facilitates efficient transport and connectivity throughout the bustling city of Mumbai.
