Nashik: In a freak accident, two Agniveers lost their lives when a shell from an Indian field gun exploded during firing practice. The incident occurred at the Artillery Centre in Maharashtra’s Nashik district, police said on Friday, 11 October 2024.
“The incident occurred at the Artillery Centre in the Nashik Road area on Thursday afternoon,” said an official.
The Southern Command of Indian Army posted on X: “Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, Army Commander, along with all ranks of #SouthernCommand, express deep sorrow over the tragic loss of Agniveers, Gunner Gohil Vishvarajsinh and Gunner Saikat from the Artillery Centre, #Hyderabad, during a field firing exercise at the #Devlali Field Firing Ranges. We extend our heartfelt #condolences to their grieving families in this moment of profound loss. A court of inquiry has been initiated to determine the cause of the accident during field firing.”

The two deceased Agniveers have been identified as Gohil Vishwaraj Singh (20) and Saifat Shit (21), said the official.
According to the official, a team of Agniveers was firing an Indian field gun when one of the shells exploded. The duo sustained injuries and were taken to MH Hospital, Deolali, where they were pronounced dead.
A case of accidental death has been registered with the Deolali Camp police based on a complaint lodged by Havildar Ajit Kumar.
Further investigations are on, he said.
