Q1: What brought you into healthcare technology, and how has your vision changed over the years? 

1. I have always been passionate about healthcare technology because of its ability to improve people’s lives. I have worked on state-based health insurance exchanges, and have witnessed first-hand how technology can increase access to care, improve inefficient processes, and create efficiencies. I started out in the aerospace and telecommunications industry, where I worked on complex systems that are mission critical. This experience has helped shape my views about how emerging technology can be repurposed for healthcare. Overall, I consider the best aspect of my career has been leading the transformation of legacy systems to modern systems, to ensure that the technology is adding real-world value for the patients we serve and for the providers and administrators that are tasked with that value creation.

Q2: You have had a substantial role in developing state health insurance exchanges. What are some key lessons learned? 

1. The evolution of state health insurance exchanges has highlighted key operations that are focused on scalability, interoperability, and compliance. It is essential that your system can reliably interface with CMS, IRS, Medicaid, and other federal and state agencies. An understanding of the evolving regulations and policies that govern a large program, like the Affordable Care Act, should be prevalent. Systems need to be flexible; that is, components should be designed to respond to changing policy needs while maintaining operational efficiencies. Cloud-native architectures can provide resilience to systems during periods of heavy load (open enrollments) and other public health events (i.e., COVID-19). AI-enabled forecasting and fraud detection processes (to name a few), have also advanced operations and decision making; and, a mobile-first accessible interface has truly opened the door to improved accessibility.

Q3: What is your approach to modernizing legacy healthcare systems? 

1. For me, modernizing legacy healthcare systems is about determining equilibrium between innovation and system stability. My method is to: 

• Understand the existing architecture and detail inefficiencies, 
• Develop and document a calculated modernization journey, including cloud migration, AI-automation, microservices, etc. , 
• Make changes through iterations and get it right so that we are safely and minimally disruptive to existing operations and improve things each time. I have delivered phased deployments for large-scale cloud migration projects that improved performance, security, and cost-effectiveness while maintaining the systems’ inherent scalability and adaptability for future improvements. 

Q4: What role do emerging technologies like AI/ML have in your vision of healthcare technology? 

1. AI and ML are having quite the impact on the healthcare IT sector, enabling predictive analytics, intelligent automation, and fraud detection. AI is improving decision-making, optimizing the allocation of resources, and driving accuracy in the claims process. AI-enabled personalized methods of care are creating opportunities for preventative health by allowing for real-time risk assessments of patients and recommended treatment. However, responsible implementation of AI requires sound data security practices, compliance with regulations, and transparency in decision-making. My priority remains on extending AI into scalable solutions designed to improve efficiency, security, and access in healthcare IT. 

Q5: How do you promote innovation among teams while staying focused on practical delivery?

1. Innovation must be led by intent and followed through with execution. I promote collaborative problem-solving, thinking across teams, and ensure that technology is aligned with the reality of business. Having a structured evaluation and prototyping process allows teams to carefully evaluate new ideas in an authorized environment, where creative thinking meets feasibility. Strong governance supports creating path forward on new proposals that can be turned into tangible improvement in terms of system performance and user experience. 

Q6: What have been some of the biggest challenges in your career, and how have you overcome them? 

A.One major challenge has been leading large healthcare IT transformations with demanding regulations and tight deadlines. Integrating systems with various federal and state agencies that require security, compliance, and stability means having a thought out way to execute. I have overcome these challenges by creating strong teams, building agile processes, and using AI-driven successful decision making to help drive decisions and needle moving improvements. Transparent communication with stakeholders has always been a best practice to keep teams aligned and minimize disruption.

Q7: What is your approach to security and compliance in healthcare technology projects?

1. Security and compliance is something that must be baked in from the design phase, not an afterthought. My practices include:

• Leveraging stronger encryption protocols and real time security monitoring
• Running regular security audits and vulnerability assessments in order to stay ahead of ever evolving threats
• Providing clear documentation, automated monitoring and governance frameworks in order to be compliant with HIPAA and regulations. Data privacy is important, as is maintaining the tradeoff between access to the systems and protection. AI driven anomaly detection and threat response measures are one way to proactively mitigate risk.

Q8: What advice would you give to people looking to enter a leadership role in healthcare technology?

1. It is important to have strong technical capability, but having an understanding of business practice and regulatory frameworks is equally important.  Keeping current with new technology and compliance standards, as well as new industry practices and trends, will help you stay ahead of the competition. It is also important to develop your leadership skills and be able to communicate well, manage a wide variety of stakeholders or personalities, and be a problem solver. In addition to engaging with professional communities it is important to keep learning in order to stay ahead of the field, especially with new technologies and opportunities arising rapidly.
