Delhi Traffic Police: Delhiites with vehicles bearing defective number plates must get the same corrected as per the official parameters or else the Delhi Traffic Police will impose a challan for not following the traffic rules.

According to official data, the Delhi Traffic Police has booked over 16,800 people for plying their vehicles with defective number plates so far this year. This is a huge rise of 286 per cent from the corresponding period of last year.

A senior Delhi Traffic Police officer reported that 16,859 individuals were cited for defective number plates from January 1 to June 5 this year. This number is a significant increase from the 4,363 cases recorded during the same period in 2023, marking an approximate 286 percent rise in prosecutions over the previous year, the officer noted.

“This surge in prosecution is part of a broader effort to enhance road safety and enforce compliance with traffic regulations,” he said. The traffic police department has intensified its crackdown on vehicles with defective number plates, leading to a substantial rise in the number of penalties issued.

“Defective number plates, which include those that are illegible, improperly formatted or do not conform to the prescribed standards, have been identified as a major issue contributing to traffic violations and security concerns,” the officers said.

Special drives and checkpoints have been established across the city, with a particular focus on high-traffic areas and entry-exit points, police said.

The Delhi Traffic Police has conducted a detailed analysis of the top ten traffic circles that have the highest number of challans issued for defective number plates in 2024, as stated by a police officer.
