New Year 2016 begins with a note of caution for the global community. The yesteryears’ most concerning issue – terrorism has intensified and the terror groups whose reach was considered to be only among the war-devastated region of Middle East, are now turning transnational.

Incidents of terrorism are reported from every corner of the world. The threat of violent attack by non-state actors, mainly religious bigots ascribed to extremist cults, is experienced by every ordinary person, whether he is residing in the first or the third world. Terrorism is no longer the intriguing topic which is raised up in drawing room discussions, but it is has turned into the real-time threat which could turn anybody a victim, whether the person lives in a Islamic country or secular nation. Within the first 15 days of 2016, 28 terror incidences have been recorded, as per reports of Wikipedia. Here are the 10 most gruesome extremist assaults:

Pathankot airbase attack  (Jan 2)

Casualties: 7 killed, 2 injured
Militant group:
Jaish-e-Muhammad
Reason: Kashmir liberation

Group of six militants belonging to Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) infiltrated into the Indian territory of Punjab along with heavy ammunition. In a gun-battle which lasted for 2 days, seven security personnel were killed before the terrorists were eliminated.

Suicide attacks at Camp Speicher, Iraq (Jan 3)

Casualties: 15 dead, 25 injured
Militant group: ISIS
Reason: Iraq civil war

Islamic State (ISIS) militants detonated themselves at the outskirts of the erstwhile US military camp. Currently Camp Speicher was being used to train Iraqi police trainees. 15 people lost their lives in the deadly attacks.

Car bomb attack in Libya (Jan 7)

Casualties: 60 dead
Militant group: ISIS (suspected)

60 people were reportedly killed in ghastly terror attack in Libya. A truck planted with bomb was detonated inside an army training camp in Zliten city. No terror group has claimed responsibility. According to Libyan government, ISIS is behind the attack.

Multiple terror attacks in Baghdad, Iraq (Jan 11)

Casualties: 38 dead, 51 injured

ISIS gunmen entered into a well-visited shopping mall in Baghdad killing 12 people and taking six hostages. Simultaneously, another section of the militants hurled bombs at a cafe in  in the town of Muqdadiyah northeast of Baghdad. Subsequently, one fidayeen of the group detonated himself at the spot claiming another 20 lives.

Istanbul bombings (Jan 12)

Casualties: 12 dead, 23 injured

Reason: To avenge air bombings in Raqqa

12 people died in the terror attack in the Turkish capital. A suicide bomber blew himself up near the Hippodrome of Constantinople, one of the most visited tourist site in the country. No terror group has claimed responsibility. But preliminary investigation suggests the role of ISIS.

Bomb attack in Quetta, Pakistan (Jan 13)

Casualties: 15 dead, 60 injured
Militant group: Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP)

High-intensity bomb was planted by at the polio camp in Quetta Pakistan. The attack left 15 dead and more than 25 injured. Taliban faction of Pakistan, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban (Pak) is suspected behind the assault.

Consulate attacks in Afghanistan (Jan 13)

Casualties: 7 dead

Terrorists linked to ISIS Khorasan group detonated themselves in Jalalabad near the consulates of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. 7 casualties were reported, including two civilians and five security personnel. Boko Haram strikes Cameroon (Jan 13)

Casualties: 10 dead
Militant group: Boko Haram
Reason: Islamic extremism

Dreaded terror outfit of West Africa, Boko Haram attacked a Christian-dominated area of Kouyape city, killing 10 people in a suicide attack.

Left-wing extremist assault in Turkey (Jan 14)

Casualties: 5 dead
Militant Group: PKK
Reason: Kurdistan liberation

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) attacked  police headquarters in the city of Cinar in Diyarbakir Province. 5 security personnel were killed. The eight militants involved in the ambush were also eliminated.

Jakarta terror attacks (Jan 14)

Casualties: 7 dead
Militant group: ISIS

ISIS made its presence felt in the Far-East by launching a spree of assaults in the Indonesian capital. 5 radical youth, who had reportedly returned from Syria last month were responsible for the attacks. The UN office, Starbucks Cinema Hall and the Senayan Mall.
