One of the most stunning spots to visit in the Nilgiris is Avalanche, a hamlet that got formed out of a landslide (avalanche) in the 1800s. It’s a must visit for anyone travelling to Ooty; it’s barely 28km from the charming hill station in Tamil Nadu.
Avalanche’s beauty lies in its dense forest cover and a gleaming lake. As you reach here, you’ll be wrapped in a silence that will calm all your senses. It’s apt for an exciting day journey, and appears almost mysteriously as you cross the Emerald Lake en route to Upper Bhavani.
The place receives almost 5,000mm of rainfall every year; the reason why Avalanche is covered in lush greenery all year round. You can indulge in activities like boating in the Avalanche Lake and trout fishing for a rather immersive experience. In fact, there’s a trout hatchery here, from where you can get fishing essentials such the rods and food for the fish.
The lake is surrounded by gorgeous hills that are covered with flowers such as magnolias, orchids and rhododendrons blooming in abundance. For those looking to stay the night, camping by the lake is a great idea.
The forest around the lake is home to a large variety of birds; a delight to bird-watchers and ornithologists. The most commonly spotted ones are the oriental white-eye, Tickell’s leaf warbler, Indian blackbird, brown-breasted fly catcher, pied bush chat, square-tailed bulbul and the Nilgiri laughing thrush.
Other nearby attractions that you can explore are the Rose Garden and Ooty Botanical Garden; some of the most pristine parks great for catching a sunset or for a picnic.
Although it’s a year-round destination; the best time to visit is between the months of March and June. The nearest airport is the Coimbatore Airport, which is around 88km away from Ooty.
