Gaga Wildlife Sanctuary located in Jamnagar, Gujarat is this gorgeous sanctuary spread over an area of about 3,332 hectares of land. It was declared a sanctuary back in the year 1988 and one of its unique features is that it is situated in an arid zone with sparse natural resources. Interestingly, it is the only sanctuary in Gujarat which provides a safe habitat for a large number of migratory birds and endangered species.
Gaga Wildlife Sanctuary is a haven for wildlife; you will find a multitude of animals here such as wolf, blue bull, jackal, jungle cat and the mongoose. This sanctuary is also inhabited by a wide variety of insects like butterflies, moths, honeybee, wasp, spiders, and termites. Among the birds, the park invites beautiful migratory visitors like pelicans, spoonbills and cranes, especially during winters. The exotic flora consists of grasslands, gorad and piloo. Gaga Wildlife Sanctuary has been facing threats with respect to the cattle grazing for many years now; especially because of its arid landscape. However, that’s being combated by fencing off a few areas of the sanctuary thereby preventing livestock and trespassers from entering the sanctuary.
If you’re a discerning traveller who’s scouting around the sanctuary for a suitable accommodation; head straight to Bhatia town. This quaint small town houses decent hotels that serve authentic, local cuisine in the midst of a serene environment. It is highly recommended to choose establishments which are officially recognised by the Tourism Department of Gujarat. There are plenty of luxurious resorts available too in the district of Jamnagar where you will be guaranteed a fine dining experience.
The nearest airport from the sanctuary is the Jamnagar Airport. This airport is owned by the Indian Air Force and operates both commercial and private flights. There are numerous connecting flights available to cities like Mumbai and Ahmedabad from here.
